new publication decided upon!

thats right! after much deliberating, house moving and getting on with other stuff since the last proper one, i have decided upon the format and content of my next comic. it will be a showcase of new characters and non-sequitor stories which i’ve had as ideas for a while, without having an outlet for. the above pic is an introduction to gary mcmashy- the half mash, half human dickhead (props to mark pearce for the name), you may remember i showed an early sketch of him here- but how did this fat slob become a mash man? all will be revealed…. also to be featured will be chiffo the bear, another character i have previewed here, in a strip entitled chiffo gets involved, and a couple of one-off strips that might be ruined if i describe them, and probably anything else i think of to fill it up between now and then. i’m aiming to get this done for thought bubble in november, and it’s going to be a back to basics black and white pen drawn job, A5 size. i’m looking forward to getting back into it after a bit of a hiatus from publishing (will be a year since Ethel Sparrowhawk 2 in November) and want to return to the banal pig style of comics, which i’ve not really done for two years. sante!

remix your own untitled cat!

so here’s what i’ve been working on recently (well, a fraction of it anyway). here’s the finished version of the snippet i previewed earlier to be published in a newspaper format comic anthology edited by richard cowdry which by all accounts promises to be a bobby dazzler- more info soon…

i had been working on a similar idea previously to this, an interactive untitled cat strip where the reader could cut out and rearrange the panels and write the dialogue, which also featured untitled ape, but as you can see above i have changed him to a more streamlined handsome version, and as a result won’t be publishing this. HOWEVER, if any pig lovers out there want to have a go at remixing this, please feel free- there are even two spare panels to add whatever you like. As an incentive, i will be prepared to give excellent prizes to the best/ any entrants and i’ll display the results here. if you want a higher res version to play with, email me at banalpig@googlemail.com. Go on, have a go- get your crayons out, and i’ll see you next time.

and here’s the table at the bradford zine fayre which me and hugh shug raine shared. i’ve borrowed this photo from him, and his more detailed report can be found here. it was a really good event, and we both sold well. if this photo whets your appetite, don’t forget everything is for sale in the shop. more exciting news soon…..

rude britannia at tate britain

you might have heard about the rude britannia exhibition at tate britain, a celebration of comic and satirical art. well, the banal pig family is represented in its own small way, as Manly Boys and Smell of the Wild (and Julia Homersham’s excellent Musetopia) are in the reading room at the end for all to enjoy. get your cheeks down there!

newz- post 246

hello pals!

i’m doing a few interesting bits and pieces at the moment- i’ve finished the much-mentioned mr wobbles/tie strip (and movie?) but i’m not gonna show you that until it’s put up on the website i did it for.  i’m working on a 40-panel full colour untitled cat strip which will be printed in a newspaper format, again i’ll have to wait to reveal the full details, but some things i can show you are a new lovely lads over on banal pig funnies which was premiered over on the fix online. i’m putting a funnie up on there every wednesday, some will be new, some will be “classics” from the “archive”, so keep an eye on it, there’s plenty of other good stuff on there too.
Also, in case you haven’t spotted it, there’s a picture of a chihuahua over on the banal pig illustration blog. i’m also currently colouring a picture i did of everyone’s fave, chiffo the bear at home with his family.

i’m excited by all this stuff i’m doing, but somehow it’s not forming itself into a comic easily, so i’m thinking aboout doing a publication that’s a slightly different format to the usual- i seem to have a lot of ideas that don’t fit into the template of banal pig comics- so i’m mulling that over. what you up to?

bag

here’s something ive been doing today; a painting/drawing on a shopping bag.

i’m not sure whether this a viable product, it’s hardly mass production, i liked doing it though. what do you think- any suggestions for subject matter? should i do some comic characters? would anyone buy it/ something like it?
